Exhibitor Spotlight: MND Association

We are proud to welcome the MND Association as an exhibitor at the Yorkshire Voices Conference on 28th February 2025 at Wetherby Racecourse and Conference Centre.

Established more than 45 years ago, the MND Association is the biggest charity funder of MND research in the UK, leading the world in the global fight against this devastating neurological disease.

MND Association funded researchers at the Sheffield Institute of Neuroscience (SITraN) in Sheffield.

While the Association plays a crucial role in driving forward the innovative research which takes us closer to promising new treatments for MND, we are committed to providing help and support to the 5,000 people who are living with MND in the UK at any one time.

For the last five years, Yorkshire has been right at the heart of the fight against MND thanks to the huge support the Association has received from our late patron, Leeds Rhinos legend Rob Burrow CBE, his wife Lindsey and their family. By showing such courage in sharing their own, deeply personal experiences of MND, they have helped to raise awareness of the disease among millions of people across the UK – we couldn’t be more grateful for their support. Rob has inspired fundraising totalling over £8.5 million which is being spent where it will have the greatest impact - improving care and support through our network of 24 care centres, the development of our Children, Young People and Families programme and our new research nurse network.

Thousands of people continue to be inspired by Rob’s story taking part in their own challenges to help raise funds of awareness of MND. Among them is Ian Flatt, who refuses to let MND stop him from climbing mountains to help raise vital funds.

Every penny we raise together is helping the MND Association to improve the services it offers to people living with MND, their carers and those closest to them.

Local support where it matters the most

In Yorkshire, people living with MND are able to access multidisciplinary care through the MND Care Centre at Seacroft Hospital, which is run in partnership with the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and the MND Care Centre in Sheffield, which is situated within the Royal Hallamshire Hospital.

Our volunteer-run branches in South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, the Yorkshire Dales and groups in York, on the Yorkshire Coast, Hambleton and Richmondshire, Cleveland and Hull and East Yorkshire, provide regular meetings and drop-ins, where people living with MND and their families can meet and access information and services close to home.

At the same time, our Association visitors are also on hand, providing regular contact when it’s needed most to people living with MND, their families and carers - whether that’s through a personal visit, a phone call or even by text.

Cath Muir is a member of the Hambleton and Richmondshire Group and uses EyeGaze technology to paint now she is no longer able to use her hands. EyeGaze Technology uses a screen with a camera that picks up eye movements as instructions. Those eye movements activate letters, words or images allowing a person to write messages, play messages or paint a picture. Each picture Cath paints can take over 8 hours or more to complete! Cath will be attending our Exhibitor Stand to showcase some of her amazing EyeGaze artwork which is also available to buy in the form of her 2025 calendar Paws among Petals, framed prints and greetings cards. All funds raised to go to support her local Group and MND research.

You can view Cath’s work on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CathMuirEyeGazeArtist, X: @catheyegazeart and Instagram: @cathmuireyegazeartist or visit her Etsy shop - CathMuir - Etsy UK.
